While coronavirus has created a temporary reprieve from some crimes, the figures are beginning to creep back up.

This year has been an interesting one in terms of crime levels and the jury is still out on what the final figures will look like.

In Hampshire alone, it was unsurprising that for the period April to June crime was between .6% and 3.5% lower than the same period last year (Hants Constabulary). Yet many expected this figure to be even lower considering the lockdown measures in place across the country.

The most significant drops in crime were in the cities while rural areas saw only a small decrease in reported crimes. In June 2020, outside of London, despite the lower figures overall, Hampshire still suffered the highest levels of burglary in the south of England, coming 6th overall (UK Crime Stats).

Traditionally, October to December suffers from the highest crime figures. A number of factors contribute to this trend for example darker nights when the clocks change and holiday time when homes are empty of residents but full of high value items.
